Program Outline

The Education Resource Center (ERC) at Middle Country Public Library offers support and enrichment for Middle Country residents, educators, and homeschooling families with children age 5 and older by providing access to the Educational Resource collection featuring science equipment and kits, math manipulatives, curricula and educational games, online resources including subscription databases and ERC specific programming. The ERC collection and programming is funded with support from the Long Island Community Foundation. Education Resource Center cards are available to out-of-district homeschooling families.

Partnerships with Organizations outside the Library

We partnered with local homeschooling groups to provide guidance and feedback for what they were most interested in and the greatest need.

In-Library Collaborations

Once we developed the collection and procedures, we incorporated the homeschooling program and library visits into our traditional library visits from our school district.

Rules

We will now be providing Education Resource Center cards for Out-of-District Homeschooling Families. The member should produce a completed Education Resource Center application form (see attached), a valid library card from their home library and a valid driver’s license or photo ID. Status should be verified at home library either in Scan or a phone call to library. If all information is valid they can be entered into our database.

  • an MCPL library card application must be completed.
  • they are to be issued an MCPL barcode,
  • expires in 1 year
  • the card will print out in blue and have the ERC logo.
  • a copy of the ERC application form should be stapled to our Library card form.

Their Library privileges are as follows:

  • can register for programs open to OOD and ECR patrons
  • can check out up to 25 items per card
  • can reserve up to 25 items per card

Unexpected Developments

Initially, we thought that the resources and collection would suffice but the homeschooling groups also wanted library space. We did allow them to use library space but we explained that it would be treated as a library visit and that a librarian would be present at every visit to introduce a resource and share information.
